Summary

Oakland County is located just north of the City of Detroit and is part of the metropolitan Detroit-area. Oakland Coutny, Macomb County, and Wayne County compose the single largest population block in the state.

Politics

Historically a stalwart Republican county, Oakland County has recently trended Democrat and has become identified nationally web design as one of the key "swing counties" or bellweathers in identifying national trends. In 2008, the county went majority Democrat for the first time, and is nearly a 50-50% split demographically between Democrats and Republicans.

The County is lead by a County Executive (L. Brooks Patterson) and Board of Commissioners composed of 25 members (13 Republicans and 12 Democrats).
