Muskegon County

Muskegon County is located on the lakeshore of Lake Michigan in West Michigan almost exactly half-way up the shoreline between the southern tip of the lake and its northern connection with Lake Huron. The county initially grew in population and importance in the late 1800s as a prime port for moving lumber cut from the Muskegon River Basin, which empties into Muskegon Lake and forms the port of Muskegon. The nicknames "Lumbertown" and reference to the city as a major port city are still in local use, though both industries are largely or completely gone. After the lumber industry faded in the early twentieth century, the city remained a vibrant port with a strong manufacturing presence that itself began to fade from the region beginning in the 1970s. It's strong location and regional natural attractions make tourism an important new area of economic activity in the nation.
