District Description
Michigan's Seventh Congressional District is perhaps the most competitive district in Michigan, having seen incumbents lose in the last three elections (in 2006, Republican incumbent Joseph Schwartz lost in the primary to Tim Walberg after defeating him for the first time in an open seat contest in 2004). In 2008, Democrat Mark Schauer defeated Walberg in a closely-watched election. Prior to Schwartz, Republican Nick Smith occupied the seat for 12 years - from 1993 to 2005.
